So as you can tell by looking at "In the nest box" we have been having a lot of kits lately. I have been paying a lot of attention to Sharlamain & Chip's two-week old litter of five... well four. Sharlamain decided she didn't want to raise them anymore and then started eating them (this is fairly common in rabbits.) Although she only managed to kill one, she completely ate one of the legs off of one of the other kits, that one is doing very well so far.
These kits are separated from their mother now, so they aren't in any danger of her. Like normal kits they are starting to hop and snoop around. They do get milk from their mother at the moment, but I am hoping to start them on puppy milk because they will be starting hard food and they wont need milk for much longer.
Whoa, whoa, whoa... What's with the baby missing a leg? Can she develope the same as the rest? Honestly, I have no idea if she is going to develope at the same pace like she is right now or if she is going to need a little bit more time than the rest. I can say at the moment she is keeping her own and seems to know exactly how to move at the same pace as the other kits. Still being one of the most active of the litter, I think she'll do fine in her development with the others.
Recently these four kits got a friend, a Jersey Wooly (Matt and BlueBelle's kit.) Although this little guy wasn't getting killed, his mother died of an unknown cause, we're thinking it was because of having the kits, and sadly this little guy was on his own, unknowing that his mother wouldn't come back to the nestbox for him. He was a litter of one so he was used to being alone, and does cuddle with the lionheads but seems to prefer to be alone. Being the same age and in the same cage now, this little guy is getting the same treatment as the other kits.
How are all these kits doing at the moment? They are doing very well, and acting like normal little kits. I love playing with these little kits. It's funny to see them start using all of their legs and they're learning in different ways. Twix, one of the black lionheads, is walking normally with his front paws but is using the tips of his toes on his back feet, which has to be one of the cutest things that litter can do. The kit missing a leg is actaully one of the best hoppers, seeming almost advanced in his walking. The biggest of the litter is using the back legs but seems to think sliding is still a lot easier. The other black of the litter is hopping and sliding right now. The Jersey Wooly is doing small hops to standing on his toes. Already these kits are cute, but not at the cutest age quite yet, and, for some odd reason, I think the cutest age of bunnies is going to be even cuter when THESE kits get to it, maybe because I've been hand raising them since they were only a few days old.
